Chris Pirsig was a student at the San Francisco Zen Center who was murdered in a random killing while he was walking down the Laguna Street. At Green Gulch Farm I used to go into his room and call him Submarine when I found him buried in his sleeping bag. The needle in the song is because at the Zen Center we sew stuff. I had heard he and his brother Ted were morphed into one to be the kid on the bike in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but Ted wrote that no, that was only Chris. Also said that he smiled at the mention of the old car which he inherited and kept running for a long time.

I wrote and recorded this song after Chris's funeral at the SFZC. It's the longest of them all at 12:29. - DC

And We'll Miss You

You were born - and you died

You had a mom - you had a dad

I knelt at your funeral - as we said goodbye

There was nothing I could say

For if I had I would have cried

You were here - you are not

You and us - now you're out

I stared at your ashes - once so thin and blonde

Was torn between this sad life

And the wisdom gone beyond

Form is void - void is form

They're no different

There's no feeling, no perception

No more or less

There's no body - there's no mind

Now here this too

There's no birth - there's no death

And we'll miss you

You grew up - you grew out

You were lone - and about

Worked on that bike, as a kiddo rode in back

We'd pass, bow, smile, say hi

Maybe stop and have a chat

Form is form - void is void

They're not other

Shariputra heard the sutra

Long ago

No eyes, no ears, etcetera

No nirvana nor this tissue

There's no birth - there's no death

And we'll miss you

You and your well known beginnings

You and your come from the snow

You and your outings and innings

You and your loud rock n roll

You and your grease and the spare parts

You and your broken machines

You and your more than it's worth car

Gettin nursed out on the street

You and your shoe sales and studies

You and your small kitchen snacks

You and your sitting still buddies

You and your straight arrow track

You and your needle and chanting

You and your eyes to your feet

You and your stuff and your

You and your us and your

Getting ordained - finally

You were hard - you were soft

You were quiet - not so cross

You put one foot forward then

Then followed the next

Concentrated - your course is set

Little brother - you've got our respect

Void's a word - form's a word

They don't help now

Life is horrible

And we're all caught in fears

Gone too soon - shines the moon

We could hug you we could kiss you

There's no birth - there's no death

And we'll miss you.

No delusion, no enlightenment

No suffering, no end to it

Just this room of tears

There's no birth - there's no death

And we'll miss you.
